Week 2: Baking
I haven’t told a lot of people this, but my other 2019 goal is that the first thing people say when my name comes up in conversation is, “Daaannngg, that girl can cook!” Yes, this is definitely a strange daydream and I don’t know if it will ever happen, but I’m working on it.
My culinary arsenal now includes fried pork chops, dressing (a.k.a stuffing), and any form of cheesy potatoes. I do best following recipes because when things start getting into “a pinch of this” and a “handful of that” I can get carried away with my interpretations. I’m currently building my experience in hopes of attaining Gordon Ramsay level cooking intuition.
Until then, baking is my JAM. Those people don’t leave a single thing out of their recipes! I have exact cooking times and exact measurements. All of this to say, I’ve been eating a ton of pie lately and have never been happier.
A quote from E. B. White says:
To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.
To any true Vermonter, I am totally disqualified because I wasn’t born here. However, my maple syrup supply stays fresh, my ski game is strong (not really), my Bean boots are well worn, and I am certainly eating pie for breakfast.
